Essentially, the BT 2027 switch off relates to BT’s plan to turn off older elements of their communications network by 2027. This means that only their newer digital lines will remain in service, so if you have an old business phone system, after the BT 2027 switch off it might be either completely incompatible and not work at all, or it might need upgrading to work with BT’s IP network.
BT aren’t my provider. Does that matter?
It doesn’t matter if your phone service is provided by BT themselves or any other provider. This is because BT, or ‘BT Openreach’, operate and maintain the core network infrastructure that the vast majority of other telecom providers use so the 2027 switch off will likely affect you regardless of who your provider is.
I already have a VoIP telephone system, will I be affected?
After the BT 2027 switch off BT’s digital network will only support calls over IP – you may have heard of this called “calls over the internet” or “VoIP” (Voice over IP). If you already have a VoIP telephone system, you can be confident that you won’t be affected by the switch off.
It might not just be your phone lines you need to think about.
Many businesses have other connected systems that might also be affected by the BT 2027 switch off. Alarms and other security systems like door access controls and CCTV might also use BT’s network, so there might be other things to consider. Older ADSL broadband connections might also need attention.
Do I need to start planning now?
In a word, yes. 2027 may still be a couple of years away, but there might be a lot of work and planning to do – best to get everything done with time to spare, rather than run the risk of missing the deadline.
